Mora

The mora was the largest military unit of the Spartan army, consisting of approximately 600 men. The Spartan mora were equipped similar to other Greek city-states of the time: each hoplite (soldier) carried a spear, short sword, and shield. Yet of all the Greek city-states, the Spartans were revered for their professionalism and excellence in battle.

Pursuit of a Higher Goal

The key to Spartan dominance was not the exceptional skill of any individual hoplite. Rather, the Spartan army was dominant because of their unity in pursuit of a higher goal. This was symbolized by how each hoplite moved in synchronicity of the mora: each soldier playing their specific part in support of the larger whole. A step too early, and the line of shields protecting each man to the right would break, leaving the mora vulnerable. A step too late and the line would break again.
